Wind Talkers
(June 2002)
If you are a fan of war movies and history then you will probably like this film. If you are a big John Woo fan looking for him to finally make a movie in the US that is comparable to his early Hong Kong flicks, you are going to have to keep waiting.
There's something about Nicolas Cage and World War II movies that just doesn't feel right. He just never looks comfortable when he's on screen. The first 20 minutes of the film are incredibly slow and the interaction between characters feels strained and unnatural. We get such a brief introduction to all the central characters that developing a fondness for any of them is unlikely.
The film picks up when the fighting begins and Woo comes into his element. The choreography of the fight scenes is believable and well done.
Rating: R for violence and some language.
