The Ring
(October 2002)
I walked into the theater expecting this movie to be just a cheesy urban legend turn teen horror flick. Instead what I witnessed was a genuinely creepy film that was well worth watching. The movie plot is centered around a deadly video tape. Unlike a Mary Kate and Ashley video, where you just wish you were dead after watching it, this tape actually does kill people. Once you watch the tape your phone will ring and a creepy voice will tell you that you have seven days.
News reporter Rachel Keller (played by Naomi Watts), investigating the mysterious death of her niece, ends up watching the tape and decides to spend her 7 days trying to unravel the mystery of the tape. Her journey leads her on the trail of an evil looking little girl, her psychotic mother, distant father and a lot of suicidal horses. Her search for answers intensifies after her young son Aidan watches the tape.
The performances of the actors, the truly eerie set design and creepy dead horses all add up to a good unconventional horror film.
Rating: PG-13 for thematic elements, disturbing images, language and some drug references.
